XOL is in the process of broadening its mission and programs to have a greater impact with the launch of "Washingtonians for Children". We recognize that education creates the choices and opportunities that best position foster youth to succeed and lead extraordinary lives. As such, Washingtonians for Children will focus on preparing high potential foster youth for college. We will marshall the supportive resources required (yet missing or underutilized) to address their unique academic, social, emotional and financial needs thereby increasing the number of foster youth that successfully matriculate and graduate from college.
Some of the "ingredients" of past programs that will be continued and broadened include:
Mentoring
- A caring adult to nurture, guide and support
- Develop a college "strategy" that positions youth for college acceptance
Aspirational Outreach
- Interfacing them with exceptional people and leaders – those who have excelled in a variety of fields/careers; made a tremendous contribution to society; or defied odds to be successful.
- Teach the vital "soft skills" that increase their comfort and confidence in an academic setting or the workplace (i.e. social skills, etiquette, public speaking, networking, etc.).
- Internship opportunities to create a link between the girls career aspirations/goals and the steps necessary to achieve them.
College Paths
- Identifying high potential youth early and charting a course that will enable them to gain admittance and transition to higher education.
- Partnerships with organizations that provide academic, leadership and financial opportunities
Travel Experiences
- Show youth that "the world is their oyster" through life changing travel experiences that broaden their perspective of the world and the possibilities for their own life.
XOL AMBASSODORS In partnership with DC Child and Family Services (CFSA) and the Family Court judges, XOL selects college aspiring youth to participate in our programs as "XOL Ambassadors. Participants are selected via a competitive process based on academic performance, an essay, letters of recommendation and an interview. Ambassadors commit to participating in a year of mentoring and local programs – after which they earn the opportunity to travel abroad.
As an Ambassador, they are required to share their experiences with other foster youth and to participate in community service activities. We recognize our kids need consistent relationships, guidance and support to stay on a positive course and avoid the inevitable trials and setbacks that living in foster care presents.
